Tobias stalked the abandoned grounds. Nobody came out here at night, not even most of the animals. He was finding that the solitude suited him. Out here, he wouldn't meet anybody, not like that.. unfortunate encounter a month ago. He locked onto a small rodent running through the bushes. What kind of rodent is nocturnal?
It was best to just be alone. He realized now that maybe he had a problem.. nothing deserving of being in here, but he didn't handle some situations well. With feline grace, he stalked his prey through a thicket of grass.
He had been experimenting with his powers more over the past few days. It was hard to get a handle on some of these forms, but so far he had successfully shifted into a large, panther-like cat, several staff members, and a dog somewhat resembling a Great Dane [albeit an ugly, mutant Great Dane, but he supposed that if he could get down the shifting, he could improve his looks later.] He had tried becoming a condor once, but had not been able to fly, either because of his mass or simply because he didn't understand the mechanics of flying. He had learned in school how an airplane worked - the plane went forward, and because there was more resistance underneath the plane, it lifted up. That didn't work for him, though.. He had no engine or propeller. He couldn't run fast enough to take off, and like hell was he dropping off a high place to see if he would glide. Land animals were good enough for him.
All of a sudden the wind shifted - Tobias froze. The rat-thing sniffed around for a moment, then scurried into an unseen hole.
Damn it!
Well, it's not like you would eat it anyway.
He always missed lunch, and sometimes dinner, but it was worth it to be out here all night. He had seen a shadowy figure strolling through the darkness one night. He thought about greeting him, but when he got a little nearer, something repulsed him - something about how his skin crawled and seemed to blend - no, to integrate itself with the darkness. Suddenly, Tobias hadn't wanted to talk to him anymore.
So he had spent the past week or so in the darkness, avoiding the curious glances of other patients as long as possible and answering as vaguely as he could to the questions of the staff.
He shifted back to a human form, that of a patient he sometimes saw at breakfast. The patient had a unique olive skin tone and tawny eyes which he had never seen on anybody else before, so it was fun to impersonate him when nobody was looking.
Still, as comforting as these nights were, they were getting a little boring after only a week. He laid down on a slight hill and gazed at the crescent moon.

The quiet click of the door was all that could be heard on the roof top. The click was followed, in short order, by the sound of fabric hitting the flat cement roof. Armande sat down next to the heap of sheets and began tying them together. The familiar task took only a few minutes. As she paced the roof to secure one end she double checked the knots that her hands touched. All secure. Her mind kept drifting to the boy from the music room. She hadn't seen him since.
Granted, it was a large complex, but she couldn't help but feel that the boy, Tobias, was avoiding her to some degree. She found herself remembering the end of their last conversation.
""I could never really make any good friends..." "I lost my mind." "Go away, Armande. Just.. forget it."
She'd waited on the roof for him to wander out all night. She didn't jump that day. Too bad that was a bad day for my moods. That's probably what made him mad. She shook herself free of the thoughts and took the free end of her makeshift rope.
Sure, it was introduced to her as bungee jumping, but it couldn't exactly be called that. It wasn't springy and bouncy like she'd heard bungee jumping was. Sheets only have so much bounce when they're snapped taut from the roof for a multi-story building. It was probably a good thing that she only went jumping a couple of times once or twice a month. She could feel the bruises already. The "rope" was cinched securely around her waist. With one quick breath she sprinted to the edge of the roof and dove over the three foot patients-please-don't-fall-off-the-roof-'cause-it-really-hurts wall.
As usual the fall felt just a bit slower than it actually was. She still couldn't justify why she got just a bit worried about the fall when she could dive at least three times faster as a gyrfalcon... and, according to schedule the makeshift rope snapped to it's end with an audible crack just as she was enjoying the fall.
"Oof, why does it always do that?" she whined to herself as she untied the rope from her waist. Once she was free from the rope she promptly fell the remaining foot and a half to the ground and, after getting the wind knocked out of her once again, recovered her air supply.

"What is she up to?" Tobias murmered to himself. Despite what every part of his rational mind was telling him, he was becoming increasingly interested in Armande. Not in a romantic sense, necessarily, but simply a growing curiosity. He was walking his nightly route last night when he had seen her on the roof.
She had seemed oddly impatient that night. She sat on the wall, stood up, sat down again, crossed her legs, uncrossed her legs... but her eyes remained focused on the door leading back into the building. "It's as though she's waiting for somebody," he thought to himself. Probably him, come to think of it. He sat down on a grassy hill and watched her from the cool darkness, but nothing changed except the sunrise at her back and her increasingly wistful expression.
This night was... different. Interestingly different. He had gone directly to watch the Armande phenomenon again, but it didn't happen. There was no pacing, no fidgeting. He saw her walk onto the roof, but then she plopped down out of sight. Just when Tobias was considering going up to the roof - just to ensure that she was okay - she appeared at the safety wall. She didn't sit down, though. Instead she plunged, arms out, straight into the air. Tobias felt a sharp intake of breath, but there was nothing he could do from where he was. Just as suddenly as she had jumped, she stopped, only a few feet from the lawn below.
Only then did he notice the white cord of sheets tied to her. "Wanna go bungee jumping tonight?" Bungee jumping? But.. that didn't look safe. Of course it wasn't. Before he could lose his nerve, he stood up and confidently strode over to where Armande was seated. "May I?" he asked. He took her dazed expression as consent, morphed into a monkey, and deftly climbed the string of sheets.
After arriving at the top, he pulled up the bungee cord. He knotted it around his waist like Armande had, pulled it to check the tightness, and leapt off with abandon. The fall was exhilirating. He felt the wind rushing through his hair, across his body.. the way his gut dropped out when the ground rushed straight at him. Somewhere in the back of his mind, a voice asked if this had been such a good idea after all. The last thing he remembered was a loud crack, a flash of light, then all was dark.

While she rested against the wall she blinked at the perimeter lawn dazedly. She could vaguely hear someone speaking to her and she looked blearily at him. She glanced at the rope. She had fallen too close to the ground. There was normally a five or six foot drop. Great job, you must've missed a knot while you were daydreaming, part of her mind growled at the rest.
She began to recognize the person as Tobias, and as soon as she thought she had a handle on things again... where the hell did that monkey come from? She closed her eyes and rested her head against the wall for a moment before forcing herself to stand.
"That was not a good thing," she mumbled. A repeat jump would not be a good idea tonight. Her stomach and sides were already throbbing and she had a rather intense feeling of nausea.
"Now where did that mon-" she started to ask herself when several things happened rather quickly. Armande looked up to see Tobias on the roof with the sheet tied around his waist. She also recognized, even from that distance, that it was poorly tied. Once those thoughts stopped buzzing around, but before she could say anything he jumped.
A sharp yelp ripped free from her throat. His hair was thrown back from his face, and he looked to be enjoying himself. It was rather short-lived. Once he hit the bottom of the fall she heard the sharp report of the sheets snapping taut. The shape-shifter slammed headlong into the ground below. The other knots had loosened enough the taller, heavier patient had hit his head while remaining suspended two or three inches from the ground.
He swung for a moment before nearly all of the sheets slipped free of their knots and fluttered about like scared seagulls. She lowered her hand from her heart and sprinted the rather short distance between them.
"Tobias!" she yelled shaking him lightly. A small part of her warned that he might had broken something falling five stories nearly totally unchecked. Carefully, she lifted his upper body and checked him over for any noticeable breaks. He's an absolute moron! Why would he do that? La dee da! I'm Tobias and I think it's a wonderful idea to climb a building and jump toward bone breaking ground because Armande-the-slightly-crazed thinks it's fun without any idea of what I'm doing!
A rather loud sigh found it's way out as well as she shook her head. "You idiot wake up," she said softly.

What the crumpet..
Pain shot through his body as he heard somebody shout, "Tobias!" from somewhere far away. He opened his eyes a little and quickly decided to shut them again as the faraway streetlamps pierced his eyes. He tried to speak, but found it hurt too much.
"You idiot, wake up," the voice said again, as the pain returned. He realized that somebody was holding him and not being very careful about it. Ow. Ow. Ow. That most definitely did not feel good. He tried to open his eyes again to alert the person that he was in agony, but once more decided that that was a very bad idea. He'd just lay here for a minute and see how his extremities were doing and hopefully the idiot jostling him about would calm down.
Toes.. curling. Fingers.. twitching. Wrists.. definitely in pain. Broken? Possibly.
What had happened? He remembered falling from somewhere high.. He had felt great, then the ground was coming up too fast, and then he was here. He had hit the ground? He must have, except he should have died from that height.
After composing himself a while longer, he opened his eyes again. He saw a fair face with short black hair hovering over him him, except the face wouldn't stay still - it kept moving side to side, up and down, and occasionally tilting a bit to the right. Well I can't focus on you if you don't stop moving.
"Armande?" He realized. "Where am I? What happened?"
